Running your pet business with the traditional pen and paper method has served you well over the years. Your business is taking off, and that’s great! But you’re starting run out of room for all the paperwork that is piling up around you. God forbid you misplace a document and find yourself rummaging through a mountain of files to find it. And when you don’t find it, you’ll have to ask your customer to sign it again or bring another copy, which can definitely be a little embarrassing.

You’re a professional and there’s no doubt you’re great at what you do. But managing a growing business on your own is virtually impossible. There is just not enough time in the day and with so much on your mind, it’s hard to keep track of everything. Frustrated, you throw your hands up in defeat. You might not want to abandon your trusted method, but for your own sanity, it’s time for a change.

You pride yourself on your hard work, your ability to stay on top of everything and your incredible organizational skills. But no matter how hard you work or all the time and effort you put in, you’re only human. You might be able to manage your business without the help of a software, but there are certain things you just can’t do without it.  Sure, you can keep track of everything yourself, but why take on all that stress when you don’t have to?

These days, it is nearly impossible to run a successful business without the help of a software solution. Technology has become crucial for businesses of all kinds, especially in the pet industry. From helping monitor pets and clients to accepting payments to even managing customer relationships with ease, kennel management software turns tedious and complicated tasks into an efficient and streamlined process.

So you finally decided to make the switch to software, but now you’re faced with a new dilemma: which kind to choose. With so many different software solutions promising to help you optimize your pet business, how do you choose the one that’s right for you? Before beginning the selection process, it’s important to understand the pros and cons of both installed and cloud-based software. While both have their advantages, cloud-based software solutions have more to offer in terms of efficiency and usability. Here’s everything you need to know.

Installed software is a program you purchase outright that is then installed on to your computer or laptop. This may take up quite a bit of space and memory and could slow down your computer. Although you are not reliant on an Internet connection as the software is installed directly on your computer, you are confined to using the software on a single device. This software is purchased as is, which means any future updates, maintenance, customer support or new features come at an additional cost. Not all installed software solutions are cross-compatible, meaning they might not run on every operating system such as Windows or Mac OS X. Keep in mind that with installed software, you are responsible for backing up your own data. If your device were to crash, unexpectedly shut down, or were to be affected by a virus, your data and/or progress would be lost.

Cloud-based software, on the other hand, requires no installation as it is subscription based. You pay on a monthly or yearly basis instead of paying the full price upfront. You can use it anytime, anywhere and on any device with an Internet connection and are not limited to a single device, such as only your laptop or computer. You can switch between devices by simply logging into your account on the device you wish to use.  While you do require a stable Internet connection, there is no need to worry about backing up your information or paying for support and updates. Upgrades, maintenance, customer service, security and backups are all included in your subscription. Your software is automatically updated and you can enjoy new features as soon as they are released. There is no need to install any fixes for bugs or to even buy new versions of your current software for updates and new features; with cloud-based software, you get the full package.

The main difference between the two kinds of software is where you find the value. When you subscribe to a service, you’re investing in a partnership with a company who wants to help you succeed every step of the way. Cloud-based software is made with the used in mind. If you decide it isn’t working anymore, it’s easy to unsubscribe at any time. You won’t lose money on a software you’re not using. When you own a product, you can choose to use it for 10 days or 10 years, it’s up to you. But if you stop using it before taking full advantage of the value of your investment, you lose money. Once you purchase installed software, it is almost like you no longer matter. Unless you pay for a service package, you’re on your own.

Installed software can be great if all you need is one person to access a device without relying on the internet, but the advantages stop there. Ultimately, cloud-based software is more user-friendly, accessible, and cost-efficient. You’ll save time and money and finally have the chance to get back to doing what you love.
