Field of Dreams Kennel, owned by Kirsten and Paul Fulk, is a full-service facility that offers dog boarding and training in Sweet Home that serves the Albany and Corvallis area. Alongside these services, they have an Off Leash Dog Training Park which offers an exclusive use for private training, dog parties, breeder fun days or a safe place to let your dog to exercise and run loose.
Kirsten and Paul started raising and training dogs in 1994, and shortly after in 2001, realized their dream of working with dogs would be on a full-time basis. As a family and a business of all trades, Kirsten followed her love of rescue and started her own non-profit, Train a Rescue. Kirsten is always creating and implementing new and exciting boarding options for their fur-guests and are full of love when it comes to their dogs.
We wanted to know a little bit more about Kirsten and how her dreams of being a full-time dog-mom to all, blossomed into what her business is today.
ProPet: Why did you get into the pet business?
Kirsten: My husband Paul and I got involved in performance events with our German Shorthaired pointer in 1992. Well one German Shorthair led to two then 5 *LOL*! We looked at places to board our dogs and none of the options really met our needs. It was at that point that we decided we wanted to devote our lives to the dogs. We do field and obedience training as well as boarding. We are both still active in the performance world and have included rescue as a part of our lives.
ProPet: What is the most fulfilling part of your day?
Kirsten: When I get an email or a note from a client letting me know how thankful they are for our service, or when a rescue gets a new life!
ProPet: What is your favourite part of each day?
Kirsten: Well my favorite part is coffee in the morning after all the dogs have been potted and fed and I know I have about 30 minutes of peace and quiet!
ProPet: What are some of the challenges that you face?
Kirsten: Staffing is always a huge challenge. Not only finding staff but training and keeping staff. I think we have a pretty good staff now so fingers crossed it stays that way for a while!
ProPet: What has ProPet changed about the way that you run your business?
Kirsten: ProPet has really made our staff training easier. In the past with our old program we had staff members that never learned the program. Now it seems like they have it down in a day or two! The other thing is our clients love it. I think that we get more new clients and bookings then we used to get. We are a small kennel and do not have a dedicated front office person so having this program means clients can do the booking when it is convent for them and they are not waiting for a call back from us!
